"Social Playground Monheim" by Jeppe Hein

Eierplatz square has become a lively centerpiece of Monheim Mitte thanks to an extraordinary work by Danish artist Jeppe Hein. On the "Social Playground Monheim", colorful benches and street lamps alter their shape to form whimsical curves: they transform into slides, climbing frames and swings. Functional objects have been reinterpreted in a humorous and playful way, creating a place that literally invites people to stop and play a while. This playground for young and old alike is accompanied by a walkable water pavilion. The form of the water fountains, arranged in overlapping ovals, make formal reference to the literal meaning of Eierplatz: “Egg Square”. They form filigree walls of water that alternately rise and fall. This entices children, in particular, to move in between them. Playing with the water is particularly thrilling for them: can they make it in and out without getting wet? What are the others who are moving around here doing? Quite automatically, people communicate with each other, meet up, interconnect, and thus transform the square into a place of togetherness.
